AI execs call for regulations but policy has been slow to move

Detroit Free Press, September 18, 2026

Even as tech executives warn of potentially catastrophic outcomes if AI development goes unchecked, AI regulation has largely stalled, both in Washington and in Lansing. Without a clear federal standard, it's uncertain whether companies will follow through on their own calls to slow development. States have been filling the gap with a patchwork of rules: in 2025 every state saw AI proposals introduced and 38 enacted some form of regulation, per the National Conference of State Legislatures. Michigan currently bans AI-generated nonconsensual sexual deepfakes and requires campaigns to disclose AI use in certain materials, but many other AI bills haven't advanced in the Legislature. MSU's Anjana Susarla is quoted on the state-by-state patchwork.

With seemingly no limit to the demand for artificial intelligence, everyone in the energy, AI, and climate fields is justifiably worried. Will there be enough clean electricity to power AI and enough water to cool the data centers that support this technology? These are important questions with serious implications for communities, the economy, and the environment.

The Hill, March 11, 2025

Robert F. Kennedy Jr., as the new secretary of Health and Human Services, is the nation’s de facto healthcare czar. He will have influence over numerous highly visible agencies, including the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the National Institutes of Health and the Food and Drug Administration, among others. While this has boosted markets and created optimism, key industries like autos and steel remain affected, leaving businesses waiting for clearer long-term trade policies.
